EBC Brakes sponsored rider Maria Costello MBE has just had her best ever finish of 16th place during the lightweight TT race riding her home created Kawasaki ER6 Pizza Race Bike with GPFA brake pads installed. Maria’s highest placed TT finish was the most wanted ending to a fortnight of mixed fortunes.

During the practise week the poor weather resulted in limited track time as Maria battled to overcome technical issues on her new Bob Wylie Triumph 675R in the Supersport class. Then was further hindered when she came off her bike at Braddon Bridge during the practice rounds, resulting in only 2 laps before going in to the main races. Maria was hampered with many problems during the 1st Supersport race including a loose seat unit and steering damper issues, but persistence achieved a finish in a low position. In the 2nd Supersport race Maria made an improvement. During the race suspension adjustments had to be made but Maria’s team performed such a good fuel pit stop that she still managed to get ahead of the other riders.

Maria commented:

I did enjoy the Supersport 2 race a whole lot more than the first. I didn’t have a seat to hold on to for starters. I do love the bike; it’s a stock engine with a Scorpion exhaust and I love the way it delivers its power, but we’ve just had no opportunity to set it up and we had to make adjustments in the pit stop. I was enjoying a battle with some guys on the road and I have to be happy with another TT finish. I have to say a huge thanks to Terri Mayne and T3 Racing without whom I couldn’t have raced.

Maria managed to qualify well and set off in 28th place and putting in a brilliant 109.75mph standing start lap she shot up to 16th place during lap one. Battling on the road with Paul Shoesmith and Neil Champion, Maria came in for her pit-stop at the end of lap one and had drafted in Michael Dunlop’s fuel expert Martin Marlow. Maria maintained her 16th place position and battled Paul and Neil continuously until they swapped places up to the third lap when Paul was dropped back leaving Maria and Neil to continued their fight till the end of the race.

Maria just beat Neil to the finish in a very welcome 16th place achieving a bronze TT replica as a result.

The pizza bike never put a foot wrong. The Metzeler tyres were working perfectly from the off, as was the Wilbers suspension that Arny from Moto Shox had set-up. And the Dymags really improved the handling and would have played a part in me lapping at almost 111mph. I loved every second of the race and my pit crew were once again epic!” announced a beaming Costello.

I really think that this finish in a very competitive field will help me to continue flying the flag for the FIM Women in Motorcycling commission and Cranfield University and I hope to continue, and indeed build upon, this form throughout the rest of the season!

It’s been difficult at times and I’ll be making many changes for next year but I’ve had a fantastic 2013 TT!

The next Supersport race is on Wednesday when Michael Dunlop will use his PTR prepared Honda superbike equipped with GPFA race only brake pads and MD stainless steel rear disc brake rotors to go for victory as part of his own Michael Dunlop Team.

This is a meaningful victory for the PTR Honda team as it means that they have now won races at British Championship, World Championship,  NW200 and Isle of Man TT events. Keep it up lads!

In Other news PTR HONDA’S Sheridan Morais enjoyed a long race battle in the fith round of the World Supersport Championship for the podium at the fifth round at Donington Park in the UK, unfortunately ending in 7th position in immense pain from his recent shoulder injury.

Sheridan said:

My PTR Honda was absolutely mint and can challenge for race wins and podiums, we have proved that today. It was my shoulder that let me down; I was in so much pain at the end that all I could do was hang on. This is very positive for us, we have the bike and speed and now I have two more weeks to heal in time for the next round.

Team Gigglepin have been busy racing recently in the very wild forest of Croatia in their Landrover equipped with EBC Greenstuff 6000 Series Brake Pads. Team members Jim and Gary had been racing hard in extreme conditions at one point facing an arduous river crossing along with coping with muddy rough forest off road tracks through dense forest woodland. On day six the lads were in 3rd place position in the trophy class and were running well until the Croatian forest finally got the best of them when a tree decided to attack their ‘Landy’ remoulding the cab roof and roll cage. Fortunately the lads could continue thanks to the efficiency of the roll cage build, but the vehicle later ran into fatal trouble when the offside front wheel fell completely off and was beyond repair. This unfortunately ended Team Gigglepin’s campaign for this year but they have already started planning for next year so watch this space!

When travelling at speeds of over 70mph along forest roads EBC Greenstuff brake pads are the best we can use, but a couple of days of hard use here in Croatia and they are past there best ! These are the rears. Many thanks to EBC for the continuing support they give the team!

Northampton resident and EBC Brakes sponsored racer David Bryant has opened his 2013 season with a dominant win in the 2 litre class of the Future Classics race series.

Bryant qualified in his Toyota MR2 equipped with Yellowstuff brake pads behind Class B rival Andy Hancock in a Honda CTX at a windy but dry Snetterton circuit in Norfolk.

After a perfect start off the line, Bryant was through by the first corner and had moved up four places overall by the end of lap one. For the remaining 40 minutes race, Bryant pressed home his advantage while fellow Toyota racer Rob Barnett of Towcester moved into second in Class B having taken over driving duties from Simon Green during the compulsory pitstop.

Overall honours went to Nic Olsen in a Class C Lotus Espirit with a Ferrari second and Morgan in third place.  Bryant stated:

It’s a great start to my season! A big thanks to Clark’s garage in Weedon for getting the car ready and also EBC for their support. Rob has a new engine package and is sure to get quicker during the season, so it will get tougher.

The next round is at Brands Hatch on May 6.

Kawasaki superbike rider Tim Hastings managed to secure a second podium win at Donington Park in the World Superbike meeting last weekend. Tim who has EBC GPFA brake pads and stainless steel rear brake discs on his bike and his Team E-Lights Kawasaki had a much more successful weekend following the disappointing experienced at Oulton Park.  During Sundays race he finished with a 3rd place podium place in round Four of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship.

In the four rounds so far he has surpassed all his goals and continues to improve each time he gets on the bike, and although there are still areas we need to improve on, I am happy with how the season is progressing. A second podium in four races is testimony to how hard the team is working and we will continue to strive for more wins.“

”I am happy to have secured a second podium but disappointed not to have won the race. All three of us wanted the win and to be fair the racing clean and great fun. With the EBC Brakes supported Subaru Impreza running in the ‘Over 2000cc Road going Production Class’ and driven by Shaun and Sarah Fudge of Lewis Dean Motorsport they set out to prove that a second place award in April was no fluke. The task would be harder than imagined when the budding privateers found out that they would be up against, no less than, a brand new factory works Vauxhall VXR.

The race car is equipped with Ultimax grooved discs and Yellowstuff brake pads.

Saturday morning practice saw Shaun setting the benchmark times with the closely following Vauxhall Astra only 1 second behind. First two practice runs from Sarah also produced two personal best times; all was looking good for the main event on Sunday.

The first two practice runs by Shaun Sunday morning showed that he was still up on the Astra by 1.5 seconds, Sarah also showing her confidence in the Subaru with a blistering run which shaved a full 6 seconds off her personal best time.

Shaun’s first official timed run in the afternoon put him well in command of the class which saw him set an untouchable time leaving the Astra drivers with nearly 2 seconds to make up.

The second run was merely a formality as the Subaru Impreza and Lewis–Dean Motorsport had wrapped up the 1st in class win in the very first competitive run of the day.

Shaun said:

We are very pleased with this fantastic start to the season, all the hard work is finally starting to pay off.  We are pleased that EBC Brakes have the confidence in the car and it’s drivers and we hope to continue putting the EBC Brakes Impreza on the podium in forthcoming meetings using the fantastic Yellowstuff brake pads produced by EBC.

The brakes performed extremely well, even on the hottest day, Sunday, they continued to inspire confidence with absolutely no brake fade at all.

EBC sponsored rider Joe Burns has had great success last weekend at Donington race circuit after finishing in second place during the race in the World Superbike meeting. Favourable weather conditions at the weekend following a very cold, wet and wintery Friday played an advantageous part on the track for Joe when he managed to gain second position in the race and was even in the lead for a lap before maintaining the second position to the finish line. Joe is now overall second in the Superstock 1000 Championship after round 4.

I did not get the start I wanted, but getting into second place on the entry to Redgate was good, I managed to take the lead on lap 3, but made a mistake and fell back to second, a good race and I am very happy with the result, especially as I am now second in the championship!

Vulcan Racing’s Peter Burchill has had racing success last weekend on 11th – 12th May at Croft in rounds 2 and 3 of the Cockershoot Cup 2013 when he had two podium finishes. This was a great result for Peter and the wet weather proved to be an advantage to his driving style, specially during the final round when he raced his way from 9th to 3rd place and finishing with only 2 tenths of a second behind David Coulthard’s car. Peter also managed to gain fasted lap during the 2nd race.
