Track day regular, James Fox, has been through his fair share of performance brake pads in the pursuit of optimum braking from his RenaultSport Megane 250 Cup track day steed.
He recently approached EBC Brakes as the latest manufacturer to test products from, promptly fitting RP-1 race pads to the front axle and Bluestuff road-legal track/race pads to the rear.
The hot hatch was then taken on an Opentrack track day at the incredibly demanding and brake-heavy Cadwell Park circuit in Lincolnshire in mid-March, with James impressed with both the performance and longevity of the products tested.
Below are James’ thoughts after finishing the full track day:
“I tried the new EBC Brakes Racing RP-1 pads up-front and EBC Brakes Bluestuff rears on my Megane 250 at Cadwell on Saturday, and first impressions were very positive! In this car, I’ve also used Winmax W5s, Ferodo DS1.11s, Pagid RS29s, as well as products from PBS and PFC.
“I’m always looking at new pads, so thought I’d try the RP-1s. After bedding them in and letting them cool, I set out for a warm-up lap and found they needed a few corners to get the feel in the pedal. You can still lock the wheels from cold, but it requires a firmer push so no complaints there.
“A couple of laps in and I’m leaning on the brakes as if they’ve been on all day.
“They really did inspire confidence like the W5s and DS1.11s, and have a much better feel than the DS1.11s and RS29s.
“Cadwell Park was wet in the morning and I found the RP-1 pads easy to modulate to avoid the ABS kicking in. When it dried up in the afternoon, they were able to lap up all of the abuse I gave them when combined with Motul RBF660 fluid and new Goodyear Eagle F1 Super Sport tyres (also very good).
“The RP-1s didn’t suffer any hint of fade all day and left me very impressed on their first run out.
“I’m looking forward to trying them with the semi-slicks on my next outing”
