Henry Wright and Kevin Glover will run RP-1 and RP-X pads on their ex-Fiesta Championship race car

Team Schnell, made up of driver duo Henry Wright and Kevin Glover, are aiming high as they once again enter the MSVT Trackday Championship race series for the 2021 season.

Runners-up in the series’ ‘D’ class for 2020 (max. 125bhp at the wheels per ton), the outfit is set to come back strong after a lockdown winter filled with some serious fettling to their Mk6 Ford Fiesta ST (ex-Fiesta Championship) hot hatch.

One of the most significant changes for this year is the addition of EBC Brakes Racing’s RP-1 and RP-X race pads, used in wet and dry conditions respectively, within the car’s Focus ST170 front brake setup.

The team tell us in their own words how they find these high-performance pads so far after some preliminary testing in the back end of last year.

“The first thing we noticed about these pads was their undeniable motorsport appearance – proper stainless-steel backing plates and no paint and no piston securing clips etc.

“The initial feeling from cold still offered a very high level of friction – confidence inspiring from the get-go. As they bedded in quickly, the pedal modulation became very consistent, very quickly. Huge amounts of friction but with less pedal effort than previous pads with no loss of modulation with the extra stopping force. The factory ABS also felt less obtrusive. We also experienced no pad knock-off at all.

“In race conditions after the bedding process and qualifying laps, the pad and pedal felt nice and solid from the first lap onwards – allowing deeper corner entry and better control rotating the car on the brakes. After handing the car over in the pit stop after 25 mins of race abuse, you normally expect the pedal to feel a bit second hand, however the first message I got back was how good the pedal felt compared to previous compounds.

“I was expecting the pads to destroy the discs due to their aggressive feel, but the disc appeared very even in wear, no scoring or material transfer. The pedal felt totally consistent over the 45-minute race. Pad wear was also commendable given the abuse.”
