Atlanta-based software executive, Brian Consaul, is one man who knows only too well the brake-related dilemmas that owning an exotic supercar can throw up.
Proudly owning a stunning 2013 Grigio Telesto Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 for a few years now, he’s long been looking for solutions to problems such as high brake dust output and easily warped discs that have emerged from the car’s factory brake setup.
Recently sampling EBC Brakes’ Redstuff low-dust pads and EBC Brakes Racing’s Two-Piece Fully-Floating discs on the front and rear axles of his two-seater sports car, it soon became apparent to Brian that these components effectively ironed out all issues he’d had with braking up to this point.
A satisfied Brian provides his thoughts on these parts in his own words below.
“Lamborghini and Audi R8 owners have always had only two choices when it comes to brake upgrades: spend tens of thousands on an OEM carbon ceramic option or suffer with the dusty and noisy steel brakes that are not made to handle the stresses of constant use.
“The OEM brakes are soft, dusty and easily warped with even moderately aggressive road driving or light track use. In just 44,000 miles, I’ve warped 7-8 sets of OEM steel rotors (including occasional track use).
“The factory pads leave my custom wheels dulled with brake dust even after a short run around the block… it’s very frustrating to have to clean your wheels multiple times a day just to keep on top of it.
“My history with EBC Brakes goes back about 12 years. After some research I ended up buying Redstuff low-dust pads recently, and this was the day that changed my life. The countless towels and hours I had spent in the past cleaning my wheels were immediately gone, and my ownership experience changed overnight. I could now go days without having to wipe the horrible brake dust off my rims. However, I was now left with another problem: sub-par factory rotors…
“Unfortunately, the OEM Lamborghini rotors are thin for weight savings, hence the easy warping. At near $2000 for a set, this soon adds up quick! No one seemed to be offering a premium brake solution for Gallardo and R8 users, until EBC Brakes Racing began developing their Two-Piece Fully Floating items recently.
“After contacting EBC, I was fortunate to have the team forward me the first set to arrive in the US, along with some new Redstuff pads. I couldn’t get my car into my local workshop (Solo Motorsports) to get these installed fast enough!”
“Upon first sight, these rotors are a true work of art; EBC has cracked the code for combining function, style and performance. The rotor hubs are a beautiful gloss black, replacing the washed-out, non-coated hub area of the stock brakes. The rotor hardware is perfectly designed and in-keeping with the perfection that only British engineering provides. The rotor faces are slotted with just the right number of grooves to give them an amazing presence through the wheels.
“My favourite part is that they’re stamped suitable for track use. While I am only a weekend warrior on the mountains or the track, the fact EBC qualifies these for track use gives me the confidence that I can run them hard and not suffer warping. I’ve recently run them hard in all sorts of driving conditions and have experienced no dust, no warping, no noise and ZERO complaints.
“In summary, these brakes are not only an engineering work of art, but a dream come true, solving a big problem Gallardo and R8 owners have had up until now…”
