The team piloted their EBC-equipped Honda TRX 450R ATV to victory across hundreds of miles
The incredibly prestigious Baja 1000 off-roading event set in Mexico proved to be another fruitful outing for the Zen Pro Racing team, who, despite the adverse weather conditions, managed to clinch the Sportsman class victory on their Honda ATV alongside P&M Racing.
2019 marked the 52nd running of the event, which turned out to be quite unlike any that had come before it. Just days before the scheduled start, heavy tropical storms reached the peninsula causing heavy damage to the course for three consecutive days. It made numerous sections un-passable, causing serious washouts next to cliff sections, large sink holes (big enough to engulf entire race trucks) and fallen boulders blocking several areas of the course.
The race was delayed by one day as organisers coordinated with local officials to dispatch heavy equipment in rural areas to repair damages caused by the storm.
Finally, without any further delay, course sections were temporarily repaired, making them passable. At 3am on Saturday, November 23rd, the start flag dropped and the race was officially in momentum. The Zen Pro Racing team took off before the sun had risen, pacing themselves for the long haul ahead of them.
With the race treating participants to desert conditions during the daylight hours, the entire pack was tested to their very limits whilst trying to reign in the best times possible. Despite the bitter cold of nightfall to go with it, the team persevered and continued to battle the elements like hardened soldiers.
Team Manager, Pedro Magdeleno, followed the team throughout with the full support crew. He commented on the situation. “The toughest challenge for our chase team was to make the crossing into and over Valle Trinidad, which is a mountainous rocky and boulder-infested area. It was also muddy and, in some spots, really narrow because of the washouts.”
As the race continued, rider Jorge Lopez stared disaster in the face after missing one of the scheduled pit stops in San Felipe, meaning he was running dangerously low on fuel. With fantastic communications, Lopez’s father had to make a 520-mile round trip to provide him with just a gallon of fuel in order to get the quad to the side of the highway. There, Danny and Pedro Magdeleno refuelled the quad and the team was back in action. Despite this setback, the team had enough lead time over the second-place racer to make up for lost time.
As night fell for one final time, Danny took over, ecstatic in the knowledge that he was piloting the front-running machine in the Sportsman class. With 50 miles to go, he reminded himself of the ‘slower is faster’ mantra – playing it safe in order to avoid crashing or breaking a vital component on his Honda.
Just over 16 hours after starting, and crossing the finish line in first after travelling well over 900 miles of some of the most unforgiving places on planet earth, the team were unsurprisingly over the moon with their result.
The team wrapped up with these final words. “We would like to thank EBC Brakes for assisting us in defending our title and playing an integral part in our championship throughout the 2019 season. See you on the podium in 2020…!”
