The Clubman 600 rider uses GPFAX pads and XC discs on his Kawasaki ZX6-R
Motorcycle racer, Neville Otter, is currently competing in the HM Racing Clubman 600 class of the NGRRC.
Otter uses EBC Brakes’ GPFAX brake pads and XC-Series floating discs on his Kawasaki ZX6-R race bike.
The first round of 2024 took the roadshow to Cheshire’s Oulton Park recently, where mixed conditions and continuing to recover from previous injuries meant Otter took a while to get into his stride, before showing more promise for the year ahead.
You can read how the weekend unfolded in his own words below.
“Arriving at Oulton on Thursday afternoon, my confidence was low due to crashes in my last two outings and carrying an injury from the most recent one in Almeria, testing for the forthcoming season.
“This, combined with a very wintery feel to the weather and the fact that I had to rebuild the bike in only four days, was only exacerbating the situation. As a result, my only goal for the weekend was for both me and the bike to survive, and hopefully bag a few points on the way.”
Testing
“Having to listen to my own advice and set the goal of simply surviving the weekend and slowly build times and confidence.
“The first four sessions, we slowly improved on a predominantly wet/damp and very cold track, until the point where all recent events seemingly caught up with me, and fatigue set in during Session 5 and I duly parked the bike for the day!”
Saturday (Race Day)
“Woke up feeling none the better than when I’d arrived, with my neck injury aggravated by the previous day’s testing, we set the bike up for qualifying
“As we arrived at assembly to join the qualifying session, I was told it was raining on the back straight, not the best news when on dry tyres! Rolling down pit lane, the rain was now upon us, I decided to go back to fit wets believing it to be too wet for dry tyres at this point.
“Got them fitted with only 12 seconds of the session remaining, needless to say I didn’t manage to get out to set a time!”
Race 1
“Starting 41st and last on the damp grid, off went the red start lights, passing several riders into turn one and then throughout the race on a circuit that continued to dry with each tour.
“Lap times were much faster by the end of the race and a great battle with the rider who ultimately finished in front of me for a couple of laps towards the end of the race.
“Finishing P24, I was very pleased with my progress.”
Race 2
“Starting P24 was a significant improvement, this time on an all but dry circuit, however still cold, we managed a great start passing a number of riders on the first lap.
“During the second lap nearly outbraking myself going into Island bend, got the rear in the air and a big tank slapper, before getting the bike settled for Shell Oils, at this point remembering my goal of coming home in one piece, I settled into a steady pace. A red flag on Lap 4 finished the race early, with a P20 finish overall and P8 in class.
“So, in summary, what started out as a poor weekend finished on a high, only a second off of my PB in ropey conditions and with low confidence starting the weekend, much more progress than I’d anticipated.”
