Austin Phipps showed promise in his Yellowstuff-adorned Audi S4
Arizona-based Austin Phipps of the Mulletsport race team is a professional drifter, currently using a modified 2012 Audi S4 with manual transmission and rear-wheel drive conversion in various drift series across the USA.
Phipps uses EBC Brakes’ Yellowstuff pads on all four corners of his drift car, as well as GD Sport Rotors all-round.
We caught up with Phipps following the latest Modded Kulture drift competition/show in his home state of Arizona, where he had another successful weekend. Read how it all panned out in his own words below.
“So we had a comp last weekend. The car did a-freakin-mazing! I drove way too hard for the style/level of competition. Had the car hooked up and qualified 1st. I didn’t know what car I was battling until before warming up the tires. So, I overall loosened up the car to chase anyone. Facing an SR20 S13 and Miata, I just overdrive (I don’t like leaving a gap on anyone) and chased too close to them for the speed of their cars vs mine. S13 parked the car in the last corner, transmission at the wall and forced me to make contact in the right front. Broke a tie rod, ending my night.”
“I definitely learned a lot about my program. My team killed it by changing tires and keeping the car fuelled up. I need to work on better spotting and get me out of my head. We were prepared and determined. Little tweaks and we will be ready for the podium. Really a testament to the partners I am working with. We are coming out of the gate swinging like a professional team.
“I am going to keep chasing the podium and prepare the car for some fun events to end out the year.”
