Street and Racing Brake Fluids – Which is best for you?

Five EBC Products

EBC offers five brake fluid options for the market separated into two families, both of which are very different in their chemistry – glycol fluids and silicone fluids.

Most modern cars and motorcycles use a glycol fluid in their system. Care should be taken to read your owner’s manual before buying or mixing brake fluids; adding the wrong fluid to your vehicle brake system can cause many problems and even degrade the seals in your brake hydraulics.

Super DOT 4 brake fluid

Our BF307+ high performance Super DOT 4 brake fluid has been specially formulated to provide outstanding performance for braking systems routinely operated at extreme temperatures making this fluid ideal for fast street use, track days and racing. Do not mix BF307+ brake fluid with other brake fluids or its high performance may be compromised.

Available in a choice of two bottle sizes – 500ml (8.8 US fl.oz) or 1 litre (33.8 US fl.oz)

Typical dry boiling point – 310°C (590°F). Typical wet boiling point – 195°C (383°F)

Not suitable for use with mineral oil systems. If in doubt consult vehicle handbook. This product conforms to and exceeds the current specification U.S. FMVSS No.116 DOT 4.

Dot 4 Brake fluid

DOT 4 brake fluid is a high-quality brake fluid recommended for use in the hydraulic brake and clutch systems of all cars, commercial vehicles and motorcycles for which a glycol based DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid is specified. With a higher boiling point than DOT 3 fluid, this fluid is ideally suited for higher performance vehicles where the braking system routinely reaches moderate brake temperatures.

Available in a choice of two bottle sizes – 250ml (8.8 US fl.oz) or 1 litre (33.8 US fl.oz)

Typical dry boiling point – 270°C (518°F). Typical wet boiling point – 170°C (338°F)

Not suitable for use with mineral oil systems. If in doubt consult vehicle handbook. This product conforms to and exceeds the current international specifications U.S. FMVSS No.116 DOT 4 & DOT 3, SAE J1703 & J1704 and ISO 4925 (Classes 3 & 4).

DOT 5.1 High Performance

DOT 5.1 high performance brake fluid is recommended for use in the hydraulic brake and clutch systems of all cars, commercial vehicles and motorcycles for which a non-petroleum based fluid is specified. DOT 5.1 has a significantly higher boiling point than standard DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids and is therefore well suited to modern high-performance vehicles and/or vehicles fitted with ESP/ASR systems. Can be mixed with other glycol fluids of the same base e.g. DOT 3, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 fluid types.

Available in a 500ml (16.9 US fl.oz) bottle only

Typical dry boiling point – 269°C (516°F). Typical wet boiling point – 184°C (363°F)

Not suitable for use with mineral oil systems.

DOT 4 Low Viscosity

DOT 4LV low viscosity brake fluid is a very high specification brake and clutch fluid, exhibiting exceptional viscosity performance even at low temperatures (max. cSt @ -40°C) which makes this product especially recommended for use in the hydraulic brake and clutch systems of modern vehicles fitted with ESP/ASR (Electronic Stability Program) systems.  This is for vehicles where the handbook states that the hydraulic system needs a low viscosity fluid, an advantage of using a low viscosity fluid is that it can flow far easier than a normal DOT 4 fluid in the finer more intricate passageways in ABS/DSC pumps. Using a higher viscosity fluid where a low viscosity fluid is specified can result in a delayed response to ABS and DSC activation during harsh braking where the ABS would be triggered.

This product can be mixed with other glycol fluids of the same base and is recommended for use in the hydraulic brake and clutch systems of all cars, commercial vehicles and motorcycles for which a glycol-based DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid is specified.

Available in 500ml (16.9 US fl.oz) bottle only

Typical dry boiling point – 266°C (511°F). Typical wet boiling point – 173°C (343°F)

Not suitable for use with mineral oil systems. If in doubt consult vehicle handbook. This product conforms to and exceeds the latest ISO 4925 Class 6 standard. It also meets current international specifications U.S. FMVSS No.116 DOT 3, DOT 4, SAE J1703, SAE J1704 and ISO 4925 (Classes 3 & 4).

EBC DOT race fluids are all Amber in colour to conform with USA FMVSS standards

If in doubt consult vehicle handbook.

This product conforms to and exceeds the current international specifications U.S. FMVSS No.116 DOT 5.1, DOT 4 & DOT 3, SAE J1703 & J1704 and ISO 4925 (Classes 3 & 4 and 5.1).

Ensure that you choose the right brake fluid for your vehicle by always referring to the owner’s manual.
