Alfie Briggs Racing – East Anglian Cup Race Report – Hunts Kart Race Club, Kimbolton, 7-9th June.

Alfie uses the EBC Brakes’ Red Kart Pads on his MS Kart because of their incredible stopping power and increased wear rate.

Eleven-year-old budding kart star, Alfie, spent Friday familiarising himself with the Kimbolton track. Unfortunately the weather was awful with torrential rain for most of the day, but he left Friday evening in a very confident frame of mind.

Saturday arrived and it was still very wet; he went out for timed qualifying on his number two engine, managing to qualify P4, but he still had his ‘good engine’ tucked up in the van!

Heat 1

Now with his good engine strapped on, Alfie wasted little time in getting into the lead. He had a nice five-second gap on the now-drying track, finishing heat 1 as winner!

Heat 2

His win from heat 1 put Alfie on pole for heat 2, and after a strong challenge, found himself in P2.  He finished the race in P2, but was later promoted to P1 after penalties.

Heat 3

Starting P2, Alfie got on with the job, leading for most of the race, he was caught and passed, and a little taken by surprise, he managed a P2 finish.

Pre-final

The points were added up from the heats and gave Alfie a pole position start!  He got a fantastic start and led from lights to flag, gaining a 1st at the end of the race.

Final

Sitting on pole alongside JDR team-mate Sam Baker in 2nd, Alfie got a great start and set off to win the 12-minute final. It was a four-kart battle at the start with Alfie in the lead.

During lap 3, he got pushed wide and came out of the last corner in 4th, he kept his head and quickly getting back to 2nd, trading places on nearly every corner for a good 3 laps, until lap 7/8 when he got driven over with an over-ambitious move at Dan Wheldon Corner. Luckily, Alfie managed to get back on track although now down in 6th place, he didn’t have long to get the win.

Setting quickest lap after quickest lap, by the last lap, Alfie found himself back in 2nd place.  Unfortunately he had to settle for this at the flag, but a fantastic mature drive by the youngest on the grid!
